Product Description

The Strymon Olivera Vintage Oil Can Echo Pedal recreates the dark, atmospheric character of vintage oil can echo machines, delivering everything from warm, warbling repeats to lush, reverberant textures. Built around an entirely new digital algorithm, Olivera captures the distinctive mechanical imperfections, unusual delay patterns and organic modulation that made these rare vintage effects so captivating.

Inspired by the original Tel-Rey oil can echo units introduced in 1959, Olivera recreates an unusual electromechanical delay process that used electrical charges stored on a rotating disc to produce echoes. Unlike traditional tape or analogue delays, oil can echoes produce dark, band-limited repeats with uneven rhythmic patterns and a naturally decaying character. The result is a uniquely atmospheric sound that sits somewhere between vintage delay, modulation and spring-like reverb.

Olivera faithfully captures these characteristics, including the distinctive residual repeats that occur even with the Regeneration control at minimum. Its three-position playback head selector offers Short, Long and Both settings, allowing players to explore everything from warm slapback echoes to complex, overlapping delay patterns. The Both setting combines the two virtual playback heads for beautifully irregular, multi-tap textures.

Dedicated Rate and Intensity controls provide access to the rich, evolving modulation associated with vintage oil can machines. From subtle movement and gentle warble to thick, swirling ambience, Olivera offers an expressive range of sounds. The Regeneration control introduces additional feedback, creating increasingly dense echoes, reverberant washes and self-oscillating textures. A secondary tone adjustment also allows the repeats to be darkened or brightened.

Despite its vintage inspiration, Olivera offers extensive modern functionality. True stereo processing allows independent treatment of left and right signals, with selectable mono, mono-to-stereo and stereo routing. A discrete Class A JFET input preamp provides exceptional dynamic response and low-noise performance, while high-quality digital conversion and 32-bit floating-point processing preserve clarity and detail.

Full MIDI implementation with 300 preset locations makes Olivera ideal for sophisticated pedalboards and studio setups. Expression pedal compatibility, external footswitch control, USB connectivity and selectable true or buffered bypass provide additional flexibility. Delay spillover allows echoes to continue naturally when the effect is disengaged.

Designed and built in the USA, the Strymon Olivera combines the unmistakable atmosphere of vintage oil can echo with the precision, flexibility and reliability of a modern Strymon effects pedal. From characterful slapback and vintage modulation to expansive ambient soundscapes, Olivera offers a distinctive creative voice for guitarists, keyboard players and producers.
